About us

About Us:

MaxSIMhealth is a multidisciplinary collaborative focused on transforming healthcare through innovative simulation experiences and hands-on learning. Based at Ontario Tech University, maxSIMhealth leverages state-of-the-art manufacturing, design, and simulation labs, supported by a blended funding model that includes institutional support, the Canadian Foundation for Innovation, and national research councils like NSERC and SSHRC.

Our lab brings together expertise from diverse faculties, including Health Sciences, Business and Information Technology, Engineering and Applied Sciences, Education, and Social Sciences. We partner with community organizations such as Lakeridge Health Hospital, Durham Region Department of Health, the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Sciences, and Simulation Canada.

One of our recent key initiatives is the STEPS Program, designed to enhance competency-based education in health sciences education. This program integrates simulation-based training into educational frameworks, preparing health science professionals for real-world challenges. Through STEPS, we aim to set a new standard in health professions education, equipping learners - from high school students to practicing professionals - with the skills, knowledge, and hands-on experience needed to excel.

At maxSIMhealth, we focus on identifying gaps in existing simulation practices and providing innovative, technology-driven solutions. By integrating 3D printing, gaming, and extended reality, we create cost-effective, portable, and realistic simulation experiences that are accessible across all care settings.

Recognizing the critical role of simulation in education and training, maxSIMhealth is committed to integrating it into curricula and professional development programs. Our goal is to support and enhance the well-being of healthcare providers, educators, learners, researchers, and leaders through networking, innovation, and experiential learning.
